Bone Densitometry (DEXA)
Location
We are located on the first floor between the Emergency Department and Lab. Drive around past the ED entrance and turn Right into the Diagnostic Imaging parking lot. There is an Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging entrance that will bring you directly into the Registration area.
Hours of Operation
Bone Density scans are performed on Monday - Friday from 1pm to 4pm.
Procedure Information
A physician's order is REQUIRED for your Bone Density scan to be performed.
Bone Density uses small doses of radiation to scan through at least two areas of the body to measure your bone density. Scans are performed on the Lumbar spine, Hip, and sometimes the Forearm to determine your bone density.
Your bone density scan will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results will be sent to the ordering physician.
Insurance Information
Medicare will pay for a bone density scan once every 2 years. They will pay for them sooner then 2 years if it is deemed medically necessary.
If you are unsure if your bone density scan will be paid for, contact Medicare to make sure. If it will not be covered by Medicare because it is inside of the 2 year waiting period and they do not deem it medically necessary, you may be asked to sign an ABN stating that you are aware that your insurance will not pay and that you will be billed for the entire amount of the procedure.
If you have other insurance other than Medicare and are unsure if they will cover your bone density scan, please check with to make sure they will cover your bone density scan.
