Twin County Regional Healthcare Honors Black History Month
As we observe Black History Month this February, Twin County Regional Healthcare joins in honoring the remarkable achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. This month is a time to reflect on the pivotal role Black individuals have played in shaping our nation’s culture, from past struggles to present-day advancements. What began as a week-long celebration led by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in 1926, has now become an annual observance that calls attention to the profound and often overlooked impact of Black Americans.
In celebration of Black History Month, TCRH is proud to recognize the legacy of the Six Triple Eight—the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a groundbreaking unit of 850 Black women who made history during World War II. These women helped clear an enormous backlog of mail for American soldiers overseas, sorting over 17 million pieces in record time, despite facing significant discrimination and poor working conditions. The bravery and resilience of these women reflect the spirit of perseverance within the Black community and serve as a powerful example of what can be achieved through determination and unity.
This year, TCRH is also spotlighting the contributions of our EMERGE employee resource group (ERG), a network of Black employees and allies that serves as a source of support, empowerment, and advocacy for diversity and inclusion within our organization. By celebrating events like Black History Month and emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives, we continue to build an environment where all employees feel valued and heard.
TCRH Chief Executive Officer Sudandra Ratnasamy said, “We are grateful to all of our team members of Black heritage for their ongoing contributions. Your diverse perspectives, resilience, and leadership are vital to creating a healthcare environment that is inclusive and empowering for all.”
In addition to participating in our internal initiatives, we encourage our team members to explore ways to celebrate Black History Month and learn more about this critical period in history. Consider visiting the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture online, supporting local Black-owned businesses, or reading about the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement.
